Breakfast- the ONLY way to start your day.

One of the easiest and perhaps the most obvious ways to clean up your diet is to consider your breakfast. So many people regularly skip this all important meal for those extra 15 minutes in bed. Rookie mistake guys! I am going to explain the benefits of eating breakfast every day. This isn't one day thing, it is a super simple lifestyle change which could seriously benefit you.

I am here to convert all you non breakfast eaters into morning meal masters!

Ok so where do we start?!

Have you ever thought of what breakfast actually means?

Basically in its simplest form it means to 'break' the 'fast'. So, if you're like me and you don't enjoy eating late at night (I really hate it!! The food lies in my stomach and I wake up feeling really ill and sluggish the next morning) then it could be 10+ hours that you haven't eaten. And heading straight to work or school on an empty stomach can have a number of effects...

1. Breakfast is needed to kick start your metabolism. Many think skipping breakfast is a good thing and avoiding those calories in the morning will help your weight loss , but that isn't the case. Breakfast is needed to kick start your metabolism, so without it, your body finds it hard to burn calories. After breakfast you metabolism has the burst it needs to get to work. So you burn more calories by eating breakfast than you would if you skipped it.....interesting thought.

2. It can affect your performance throughout the day. It has been shown that those who ate breakfast in the morning before school were more alert and performed better in tests than those who skipped it.

3. Skipping breakfast can make you grumpy. I am the WORST hangry person (Hungry angry) ever, ask any of my friends or family, they know when to avoid me in the midst of my hangry mood.  And it seems I'm not alone, by skipping breakfast in the morning you too could be that hangry person everyone wants to avoid. Don't be that guy.

4. Eating breakfast helps you lose weight. Research has shown that those who miss breakfast consume more calories at lunch time, not really the ideal plan when you are trying to cut down. Skipping breakfast also results in a greater amount of snacking throughout the day, usually on those treats which we are trying to avoid. So start your day the way you mean to go on!

5. Breakfast reduces weight issues in children. A study has shown that those who consume cereal regularly  had fewer weight  problems than those who ate them infrequently. And occasional cereal eaters had a 13% increased risk of being overweight than regular eaters. This is something which can also be seen in adult hood, so whether you are a child, teenager or parent breakfast is of key importance to maintaining a healthy weight.

So even if you think after all that....breakfast isn't for me....WISE UP!!! The clear health benefits from eating something well balanced in the morning are undeniable. So if you are serious about making positive changes within your lifestyle, here is a great place to start.

You might have realised by now that I am indeed a breakfast fanatic!! I bloody love it! It is possibly my favourite meal of the day probably because I am a morning person, nothing is better than that feeling of being awake before the rest of the world.....ok just me?! So to try and inspire you guys into eating breakfast (If you don't already) or to try and give you a few more ideas. I have included my favourite breakfasts to have....yummy yummy!! I am already excited for breakfast tomorrow....yes I know I am a food NERD!

Firstly my go to breakfast- Porridge. I always add a dessert spoon of flaxseed to increase the fibre content and it's also a great source of omega 3. Some blueberries and a small amount of maple syrup make this a super yummy and healthy breakfast.

This is a weekend treat for me, or in the morning if I am feeling particularly organised. I love pancakes, so I make my basic standard recipe, (sometimes adding flaxseed or porridge oats) and then mix and match my toppings. Obviously this day I chose a dollop of greek yogurt and whatever fruit is in my fridge- today it was blueberries. yummmy!!

Another favourite of mine is poached eggs on toast. This is the perfect combination of protein and carbohydrate, and if time is short it is super easy to poach your egg in the microwave. I normally would have this with wholemeal or granary bread. But we only had white bread in the house when I was having this for my brekkie.

Hope this blog has inspired you to make the most of your morning let me know what you guys think :)
